QIII Source Code has been released!

Filed under: Uncategorized — Site Admin @ 6:06 pm

Well, the rumors are true! John Carmack followed through on his big QuakeCon 2005 anouncement and the source code for Quake III has been released. The file is around five and a have megs and will soon be at any website near you and is available for a limited time (till we feel like deleting it) here (quake3-1.32b-source.zip)

It will be an interesting time as all the mods that are still around like World of PADman and Tremulous decide how to handle this news! And what does that mean for us? After all WildWest is a mod of RtCW which is in turn a mod of Quake III… Time for some deep thoughts…

A Word of Warning!

Filed under: Uncategorized — Site Admin @ 8:24 am

We’ve just upgraded the forum software to the latest release of VBulletin

There are no new major features in this version just some bug fixes. The only worry is that this was our first forum software upgrade and we didn’t want to overwrite any of the modifications made to the forum styles. The upgrade seems to have gone flawlessly. So let us know if you see anything out of whack. We’ve not noticed anything; all is good so far.

We will probably upgrade to VBulletin 3.5 after the next release candidate or two. It has some neat new features and we may as well be on the forefront of the update wave.

I’ve also been planning an update to the Word Press software. I’ve got all the pieces lined up; so I hope to put in in place this week.

On the development side, we’ve also gotten some more behind-the-scenes work done. Since we upgraded to a full blown professional hosting account earlier in the year, the new server has allowed us to put in place our own CVS server. What is CVS? It is a source code control system, I think it stands for Concurrent Version Control, but that’s an assumption. Basically it allows a bunch of people to make changes to the same file at once and keep the result in on a master server. So it should make life easier with everyone making changes to all the files. In fact, since when setting this up, the original RtCW source, WildWest 1.5 and WildWest 1.6 source codes were all included we can do visual comparisons between all three. That’s how we were able to determine exactly what was up with the volley rifle code everyone has been asking about. So, we’re already reaping benefits.

Some Nice Figures

Filed under: Uncategorized — Site Admin @ 10:51 pm

I thought you might get a kick out of the Beta 1.6 download stats from FileFront.

So far there have been 283 downloads of the EXE, 125 downloads of the Zip and 408 downloads of Iggy’s trailer.

Not to shabby for a beta….

A Brief Update

Filed under: Uncategorized — Site Admin @ 6:54 am

I’ve done a detailed analysis of the code and found a difference in the volley between 1.5 and 1.6. I have a long three paragraph post written up all of the differences but none of them amount to much compared to this final one I’d found. Basically the Volley rifle now works like the rest of the guns only fired 7 at once. We got rid of the special volley code and unified it with the regular gun fire code.

Each one of the bullets in the volley rifle is much weaker than a bullet from one of the other guns, as true in real life, and each bullet, of course, has a chance to miss. So, in both versions, you can fire the rifle and have 3 bullets hit and four miss.

However, the volley bullet code in 1.5 had one special difference that was overlooked. It turns out that if you are hit by a normal bullet it will cause a small amount of damage no matter what, 5 hit points. In 1.5 the volley rifle code allowed some bullets to hit you and cause no damage at all. That didn’t always happen, but it could. This in fact seems somewhat un-realistic. If you are shot by a volley rifle, and all 7 bullets hit, in 1.5, it is possible that no damage be caused at all. In fact I think we’ve all see that happen. I know I’ve unloaded a rifle in peoples backs before and they kept on running when by all rights, they should have been dead. That doesn’t happen in 1.6.

I don’t think we’ll keep the min bullet damage at 5 points. With all bullets hitting, that means the minimum damage from a well aimed volley rifle hit is 35 points (Now remember that at any distance that would require incredible aiming skill and all 7 bullets would have to hit.) I don’t think we should lower it to 0. That sounds unrealistic. 2 would probably be a good number, IMHO. We were supposed to talk about it in Sunday’s meeting but I was traveling and couldn’t attend. I haven’t caught up with the rest of the gang to see what I missed.

The WildWest News Site blocks comment traceback spam

Filed under: Uncategorized — Site Admin @ 12:08 pm

Just a quick update to the site. You may or may not have noticed some
of the SPAM that has been hitting this site. We haven’t even published
it and the pages have been getting spammed. I’ve implemented a new spam
blocking technique (1 of several more coming soon) that will prevent
several of the most common spammers from hitting our site. As a result
I am now able to turn off the comment approval feature. So, comments
should start coming up immediately.

World Year of Physics 2005 - Einstein@Home

Check it out, the people who have done Seti@Home (that allows your computer, through the screensaver, to help find radio signals from space) have now expanded what they do.

This site allows you to search for gravity waves in space - something we know must be there but haven’t yet found. OR you could even solve Bio Medical questions on your computer when the screen saver is up.

Nightly Report

Filed under: Uncategorized — Site Admin @ 9:01 pm

Took the standard generic news page and gave it a style that will more closely match what we have right now for the website.

I’ve got it basicly to the point I’ll leave it.
The feel is OK and is close enough to what we are leaning towards for the new website that it will fit in I think.
I’ve done some research into style sheets and all this is done with a style sheet. Change one line and the whole thing has a new look and feel. So we could have one in the style of the old website and the content would all work just fine.
I’ve got an email account setup for webmail submissions and I have sent one in but it has not appeared. I need to figure out why.
Put in a good 6 hours on it tonight. That’s enough for now.

Introduction to The-WildWest

Filed under: Uncategorized — Site Admin @ 9:22 am

As you can tell, we’ve updated our webpages. Our news page is MUCH improved and hopefully that will help us get more information out to you faster.

Here are a couple things to note:
 News can more easily be added by any member of the mod team. Till now only Hewster was able to update the news page and it was a drawn out process involving Frontpage and manually tweaking the news and archive pages.
 You can now register and comment on any news that we post.
 Certain members of the community will be given the rights to add post news. So if someone is working on a map and there is a new release, they can update our news page with the link!
 We’ve imported all the old news (Thanks Preacher) from our original website. You can see how the mod progressed from the very beginning.
 You can have YOUR web page linked to from our news page. If you have a WildWest fan site and it is not listed here, let us know!
 Our page now offers full RSS Feed. HUH? What’s that? Well, simply put you can have our page come up automatically on programs and websites such as My.Yahoo.com.
You can add The WildWest News to your My Yahoo page by clicking HERE.

Anyway, this page will be improving over the next few weeks and will be made available for wide use with the release of 1.6. Enjoy!
